This map is straight from Vietnam, and as you can see, still has a bit of dirt from Vietnam on it as well. The map was rubberized in order to protect the paper from humidity. The map was very large, not properly sized for the cockpit. Therefore, when the pilot opens the map, he has to fold the map so that his destination is on the top.
The Silver Star is the third highest in-action military award that a soldier can receive in the armed forces. The Silver Star is awarded for gallantry in action while engaged in military action against an enemy of the United States, while engaging in foreign operations involving conflict or opposing forces, or while engaged with friendly foreign forces engaged in armed conflict. Actions that merit a Silver Star must be of such a high degree that the actions must be above required needs for all other US combat decorations but do not merit the Medal of Honor or Service Cross. CWO David Samuels was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States.
